Why proper cleaning is so important for menstrual sponges
A menstrual sponge is a natural product. Its fine, open-pored structure makes it particularly pleasant to use and at the same time sensitive when it comes to cleaning.
That's why proper care plays a central role. It determines how hygienic your sponge remains and how long you can use it.
Precisely because the sponge is worn inside the body, careful cleaning is important to promote a clean feeling and minimize the risk of irritation or infection.
At the same time, care has a direct influence on its lifespan. With regular and thorough cleaning, a menstrual sponge can be used for several cycles – often up to six cycles.
Over time, different methods have been established for this. Some of them have been known for generations, others have only emerged in recent years.
And this is precisely where a closer look is worthwhile.
Vinegar as a cleaning agent: Why we changed our minds
If you've been using menstrual sponges for a while, you've probably come across cleaning with vinegar before.
We also used it that way at the beginning.
Vinegar has always been considered a simple home remedy with antibacterial properties. It is readily available, natural, and for many years was passed down as a standard solution, often without much questioning.
At the same time, this method comes with some uncertainties. What type of vinegar is right? How diluted should it be? And how long should it soak?
In addition, there are very practical aspects: The smell is unpleasant for many, and its everyday use is not particularly comfortable. Often, it requires several hours of soaking time, and a clear, reliable routine rarely emerges from this. Furthermore, vinegar can lose quality over time or, in some cases, "expire," meaning it no longer has the expected effect.
Regardless, we asked ourselves early on whether there couldn't be a simpler and hygienically more effective solution.
That's why we started developing our own cleaning formula: Our HERA Cleaning Tabs, which are specially tailored for menstrual sponges and allow for clear, uncomplicated application.
This process was accompanied by laboratory tests to specifically check the cleaning performance. In addition, we had the ingredients and formulation checked by a gynecologist.
Recently, the classic vinegar solution was also examined by an external laboratory. It turned out that the cleaning performance just fell short of the recommended guidelines.
Even though this deviation was small, it confirmed something important for us: Our aim is to offer a solution that can be relied on without a doubt. And that is exactly what we have repeatedly seen in our tests since the beginning. We are all the more pleased that this has now been independently confirmed once again. And that is exactly what our cleaning tabs stand for today.
What makes our cleaning tabs so special
Our cleaning tabs were developed to make cleaning menstrual sponges as easy and reliable as possible.
Unlike classic home remedies, you don't need your own mixture, no guessing, and no uncertainty. The application is clearly defined – and that's what makes the difference in everyday life.
The same applies to the ingredients: as much as necessary, as little as possible.
The tabs contain gentle surfactants (5–15%) for cleaning, as well as an oxygen-based bleach under 5%. The formulation is complemented by preservatives that inhibit the growth of bacteria and mold. Natural fragrances ensure that the application remains pleasant.

The recipe is deliberately kept mild, based on natural ingredients, is vegan, made in Germany, and free from unnecessarily aggressive chemicals.
The selection and formulation of the ingredients have been approved by a gynecologist and checked by laboratory tests. Not only was the cleaning performance confirmed, but also that the application is hygienically safe. These results are regularly reviewed to ensure consistently high quality.
This creates a solution that is not only well thought out but also feels right in everyday life: clear, uncomplicated, and reliable.

How to use the cleaning tabs correctly
The application of the cleaning tabs is deliberately kept simple so that it can be easily integrated into your routine.
For thorough cleaning, place your menstrual sponge in a container with warm water and add a tab. The tab dissolves and immediately begins to work.
Leave your sponges in the solution for 20 minutes – feel free to use all three from your 3-pack simultaneously. During this time, residues will be reliably dissolved. The silicone thread can remain on the sponge without any problems, it will not be affected by the cleaning.
Afterwards, rinse the sponge thoroughly with clear water and let it dry completely.
This form of cleaning is particularly well suited before and after your period, or whenever you want to give your sponge more intensive care – for example, after sex.
A common myth: "Isn't the sponge unhygienic?"
Many people immediately think of kitchen sponges or plastic sponges when they hear the word "sponge" – and that's often where the uncertainty arises.
However, a menstrual sponge is something completely different:
It is a natural sea sponge with a fine, breathable structure. Unlike synthetic sponges, it contains no artificial materials where bacteria can easily settle.
Due to its natural properties, the sea sponge is naturally antibacterial. Bacteria (biofilm) have a much harder time adhering to its uneven structure than to smooth surfaces, such as those of tampons.
If you clean it properly and change it regularly, it is therefore no less hygienic than other period products.
Before and after your period, we recommend cleaning with the cleaning tabs to thoroughly cleanse the sponge and prepare it optimally for its next use.
During your period, you can rinse your sponges with clear water. Then insert a fresh sponge.
Changing allows each sponge time to dry completely so that no residues permanently collect in the material and your sponge remains hygienically fresh. This is an important part of hygienic use.
What should you avoid when cleaning?
-
Do not boil
High temperatures can damage the natural structure of the sponge. -
Do not put in the dishwasher
Aggressive cleaning agents are too strong for the delicate natural material. -
Do not use regular soap
Many soaps contain fragrances or residues that can irritate the sponge and your intimate area. -
Do not dry in direct sunlight
Direct heat can dry out the sponge and make it brittle.

Quality, Laboratory Tests, and Safety
Before a menstrual sponge reaches you, it undergoes several careful cleaning steps.
Immediately after harvesting, the sponges are processed using a special cleaning method. This removes natural residues and creates the basis for safe further processing.
Subsequently, they are cleaned again in Switzerland, checked, and manually inspected before being packaged. This way, we ensure that only sponges that meet our quality standards are shipped.
When your sponge arrives, the final step follows: cleaning before the first use with the cleaning tabs. This completes the cycle of careful preparation and conscious use.
In addition, you also carry out a final quality check yourself. Since it is a natural product, it can occasionally happen that small natural residues are contained in the sponge. This is completely normal and harmless.
Furthermore, we commissioned laboratory tests ourselves to check for possible residues – including heavy metals. No harmful substances were detected.
This is not self-evident. With many conventional disposable products such as pads or tampons, the composition is usually not transparent for consumers. In independent studies, heavy metals such as arsenic, mercury, and lead were detected in some well-known brands, in addition to plastics and various chemical components. At the same time, there is no declaration obligation for the ingredients.
For us, that was precisely a reason to go a different way. Our results are clear: no harmful substances were detected in our sponges.
With a natural product that is consciously reduced, clearly tested, and whose quality we actively monitor – from the first step to application.
This creates a solution that not only works but also feels right.
Conclusion
Cleaning a menstrual sponge is not a complicated process – but a crucial one. For a long time, vinegar was considered an obvious solution. Today, it makes sense to take a closer look and further develop existing routines. With a clear, tested, and easy-to-use cleaning method, you gain security in everyday life. You know what you're doing, how it works, and what you can rely on. At the same time, proper care not only supports hygiene but also the longevity of your sponge.
FAQs
How often should I thoroughly clean my menstrual sponge?
Thorough cleaning with our cleaning tabs is recommended before and after each period. You can also perform it in between if needed. Even if the sponge is not used immediately after the period, cleaning before and after is useful:
After the last use, there may still be minimal residues in the material. Before the next use, another cleaning ensures that your sponge is hygienically fresh – because dust, for example, could settle during storage. This ensures that your sponge is used under optimal hygienic conditions every time.
How do I clean the sponge during my period?
Rinse with clear water, gently squeeze, and reinsert alternately with a fresh sponge.
Why should I switch between several sponges?
Switching allows each sponge time to fully clean and dry so that no residues permanently collect in the material and your sponge remains hygienically fresh. This is an important part of hygienic use. It also ensures that all your sponges are used evenly.
How long does a menstrual sponge last?
With good care, a menstrual sponge can be used for up to 6 months. Regular cleaning and careful drying are crucial.
Is the cleaning also suitable for sensitive skin?
Yes, the cleaning tabs are deliberately formulated to be mild and adapted to the intimate area. If you are very sensitive, approach it slowly. The resulting foam can be completely rinsed out with water, so no residues remain in the sponge.
Do I need to intensively clean the sponge after each use?
No, intensive cleaning is not necessary every time. It's about regular care throughout the cycle.
